Finding Residents Employment Outside the Home

Many residents are capable of working at nearby stores, restaurants, etc. Transportation for residents to their places of employment could be provided by public transportation, by their employer, or by the Group Home. To determine their ability psychological testing and testing for daily living skills are usually performed. Jobs are found by staff personal visits to local busi- nesses, by newspaper ads, through efforts by directors, friends and families of residents. Job interviews with residents and employers are conducted. Daily transportation to jobs varies— some take the bus or Home staff can help. Sometimes counties and local governments can provide transportation via vans, and in some cases parents of residents can help. With luck the employer might be able to provide a ride.

Some residents have served as volunteers at area nursing homes to help and interact with nursing home staff and patients, e.g. about once a month serving ice cream to residents.
